Groups Advertising – Is the group active? Do the group rules allow advertising? Is the group targeted to your target audience?

Signature Lines Exchanges – Does the other business compliment yours? Are they in different groups than what your in so you get more exposure.

Link Exchanges – Make sure the site has traffic; one way to find out is to ask. Make sure the site compliments your product. Make sure it has a Google ranking of at least a 3. Does the site target your audience?

Site Advertising – What are the site stats? Ask the Webmaster if you can’t find it on the site. Check Google page ranking. Check to see if the site is updated with new information regularly. Does the site target your audience? Does the site compliment your product?

Ezine Advertising – Again ask for the stats, don’t just ask how many subscribers they have. Ask how many are reading their newsletter. Make sure the ezine is geared towards your targeted audience.

  • Given links or editorial links are what the search engines value the most. If they could rank pages based on the natural links that are created because one person actually likes and recommends another site, they’d be able to

If I link to the Microsoft web page with the words “evil empire” I am probably not recommending Microsoft’s products… but I would be sending them some PageRank nonetheless.

Search engines would probably like to be able to tell the difference between these types of links. They’d like to be able to break links down into even finer categories than I have.

For most readers, your approach to building links will depend, to an extent, on what you think search engines are capable of doing today, what they may become capable of doing in the future, and how you expect them to respond to different types of links.

Why Site Structure Is Important

While most of your competitors are still trying to use a “sledgehammer” approach, and overwhelming the search engines with massive quantities of inbound links, you can gain a tremendous advantage by paying attention to how your site is linked together.

There are four primary goals in structuring, or restructuring, a web site:

  1. Improving the user experience is your first goal, because this leads to higher conversion rates, happy customers, etc. If I ever have to choose between creating a good user experience and an SEO objective, I will choose my site’s visitors every time.

  3. Increasing the ranking of individual web pages within the site, and “broadening the profile” of our most important pages. By using the “anchor text” of our own internal links, and adding the right links in strategic places, we can boost our own search engine rankings.
  4. Getting more pages into the search engines’ index, also known as “index
    penetration.” Every additional page that gets indexed adds to our ability to           improve our rankings, and in fact makes it easier to increase index penetration.

It shouldn’t be terribly shocking that the four stages of the “site structure” step are mapped against these four goals.

The Purpose of Keyword Strategy

The goal of your keyword strategy is to get the best total quality return on your investment. If that sounds like a mouthful, it’s because there’s more involved here than just how many people visit your site.

If someone finds your site in search results, but they’re looking for something else, you didn’t do yourself any good. It’s far better to get 50 visitors who want what you have, than to get 1000 people who leave before the first page finishes loading. What your web site needs, more than anything, is targeted traffic.

Understanding keyword strategy begins with knowing how people search. For any given topic, there are literally thousands of ways that people will select a keyword or phrase when using a search engine. The more different keywords and phrases your site “ranks” on (in the top 10 listings on the search results), the more often it will show up when a member of your target audience conducts a search.

Every time your site appears in the search results, there’s a chance your site will be visited. Obviously, the higher your site ranks, the better your chance for success. Ranking is very important, especially when you’re in the top ten. But the difference between #1 and #3 is not as significant. What matters most, once your site appears in the search results, is whether your title and description match what that particular web surfer is looking for.

The total formula, then, involves how many keyword phrases your site can rank well on, how high your site ranks for each of those searches, combined with how relevant and enticing your page titles and descriptions are. Obviously, then, increasing the number of keyword phrases your site covers will often deliver far better results than trying to rank well on one extremely competitive keyword.

The best part of this, from our perspective, is that increasing the number of keywords actually helps you target the right audience. This only makes sense – a #1 ranking for “real estate,” even if you could achieve it, only attracts a very general audience. A #1 ranking for “Dallas TX condos” and related phrases is much easier to attain, and far more targeted.

Why Ask SEO Questions?

Likely you would not buy a used car because it was both used and a car. You also would not likely want to buy the cheapest used car (at least you would not if you wanted a reliable used car).

When you buy the services of an SEO you are investing and taking a chance. Most successful businesses take chances though most do not take blind risks.

Many SEOs may not have the time to answer all of the questions listed above (as I probably would not answer all of them). They should have time to answer a few of your questions though. It is their job to sell you their services. It is not your job to blindly buy them. In addition to the above questions you may also want to ask a few questions that are not listed. You should ask multiple SEO firms various questions you consider vitally important to your business model.
There is nothing that is concrete about SEO. The things that work today may not work well tomorrow. The people who do the best job of answering a few of your questions prior to you hiring them stand a good chance to also provide the best customer service after you hire them.

SEO forums have a ton of good information and a ton of misinformation in them. Read through a few different ones to learn the tone of each and ask a few questions about things that concern you.

There are usually no guarantees with SEO, but you stand a far greater chance of finding a good, honest SEO if you ask around and learn a small amount about SEO vice picking an SEO firm at random.

6. Do You think My Site Has the Ability to Rank well with its Current Design?

They should tell you if they think there are problems with your current design because they will likely need to be changed, and the changes will have associated fees the firm will need to justify.

In these competitive fields you likely will spend at least $10,000.

9. How Long Should I expect to Wait to See Results?

If you are doing pay per click marketing they may be able to have you set up in a week or less. Regular SEO takes a good bit longer. For most SEO projects you should expect at least a two-month wait to see results. If a person tells you that you will have top rankings in only a few days it is typically a reason to be suspicious. The SEO firm should commit to a rough time table. It may not be a firm one but they should at least give you a time range where they would expect you to see results in.

Some search engines occasionally have major shifts in their algorithm which can delay results, but usually your SEO should be able to give you some idea of how long the process should take and when you should start seeing results.

If you are in a competitive category you should expect to pay the SEO ongoing monthly fees for keeping up with the competition.

Some search engines may use filters to penalize artificial link building, so you want to make sure you use a couple different link text phrases in some of the various links pointing at your site.

Quality link building takes time, but you should see more links pointing at your site a few months after you hire your SEO firm than you saw the day you hired them.

12. Do you use cloaking or other techniques which are considered risky or deceptive towards search engines?

Cloaking and other deceptive techniques in and of themselves are not bad. What is a bad thing is when an SEO firm uses deceptive techniques without letting you know. In certain competitive fields aggressive SEO techniques may be necessary, but most keywords do not require cloaking or other aggressive techniques to gain top rankings.

If you have a pharmacy or gambling type website expect to need to use risky techniques, spend a large sum of money, and build a large linking campaign.

13. Have you ever got any site banned from search engines?

Getting a single site banned is not necessarily bad. Some of the most respected SEO professionals have been too aggressive and had websites banned from search engines (though many SEOs are conservative and never have had this happen).

You do not know what the limits are unless you test them. Most webmasters buying SEO services are not interested in donating test sites though. Ensure your SEO firm knows how much risk you are willing to take.

It is not important whether they have got any sites banned, but what is important is the language of their response. If they sound defensive and rude then they probably would be a bad SEO partner.

14. Don you have any guatantees of your work?

Many top SEOs work off their reputation and do not have any guarantees. Many SEOs will explain why they do not have guarantees or what their guarantees are. Make sure you understand exactly what keyword phrases, search engines, and time frame they guarantee.

15. Could I please speak to a few of your current customers?

Many SEO firms keep many of their clients secret so they may keep their competitive advantage. It does not hurt to ask and talk with a few clients though.

Some SEO firms may have buddies sing for them. Check out site details of the sites they worked on from sites like Internet Archives. If a client says they have worked with the firm on their current site for 3 years and the site is 2 months old it is likely a
shady SEO firm.

Also use your best judgment! If something seems like it is questionable or it is too good to be true then you should look elsewhere.
