TELUS to soft-launch GSM network in Fall 2009?

Over the past few weeks, we’ve spoken to quite a few people in the know who have casually mentioned that TELUS is soon going to be flipping the switch on its HSDPA network in a few major Canadian markets. The focus of the soft-launch will apparently be on the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. This information is further corroborated by a tip we received recently from a TELUS engineer who claims that September 2nd is the date that TELUS is eyeing for the soft-launch. The move will not only allow the company to iron out the kinks before a nationwide release, but it will also ensure that it has ample time to get everything thoroughly tested for February 12th, 2010 when all of the world comes to Vancouver and Whistler for the 2010 Winter Olympics (oh hi, GSM roaming fees). What makes this even more interesting is the fact that the same people also mentioned a Fall launch for Bell, the official cellular carrier of the 2010 Winter Olympics and a company that happens to have a Canada-wide tower sharing agreement with TELUS. Who’s excited to see Rogers’ GSM monopoly come crashing down?

A3700 EV-DO / HSPA / GSM hybrid modem for Verizon passes through FCC

Are you a frequent flier in need of high-speed laptop connectivity around the world? Is AT&T’s troubled 3G network causing you too much pain here in the US? Do you love hearing distant screams of agony from the accounting department each time you submit an expense report with international roaming charges? Say hello to your new best friend — the ZTE A3700, coming soon to a Verizon Wireless retailer near you. Having just made its way through the FCC approval process, the A3700 makes up for its bulk by sporting nearly every kind of connectivity you might need in your travels. EV-DO, GPRS, EDGE and HSPA, all packed into the ugliest yet most versatile USB modem you’ve ever set eyes on. It’s a bit too early for pricing details but you’re just going to expense it anyway so it doesn’t really matter. As for a formal announcement, perhaps we’ll see this little guy debut at CTIA early next month.
